So Handsome and So Tall

by Anne Babin

This is my son - the shy one - smaller than the others,
Stumbling often, falling down...
He almost runs to meet the plane for Dallas
And the interview -- a career possible in the trip.
Eager, bright as a new penny, anticipating new friends.
My son, who screamed in fear when a stranger came near...
Taking on the world with the confidence of David
Meeting Goliath on the field of battle.
When did he grow so strong and tall and handsome...
The freckle-faced one with toothless grin,
who shrank from new people?
Now responding to Houston, Boston, Chicago and Schenectady--
The Unknown -- with the polish of a pro.
The young executive, the graduate engineer...
Still, to me the little boy with bandaids on his knees,
His arms around me then for comfort...
Now "Don't worry Mom, I've got it made... they want me everywhere."
Praise God for this - my son - the shy one, loving and caring,
Setting out on life's adventure.
God Bless You, son, and go with you...
My little boy, so handsome and so tall.
